La Verne Red

Hylocereus Guatemalensis Hybrid. This variety got its name after the nursery where it is grown commercially and sold as plants in Southern California. This nursery sometimes grow and sells dragon fruit plants from seeds makes it possible that one La Verne Red plant to be producing a different fruit then other La Verne Red plants. Being spelled La Verne or Lavern, there is one La Verne type specified as being “Donovan’s Lavern”
As most Hylocereus Guatemalensis species this variety has minimal spines, but unlike others, when matures, the segments begin to twist. The flowers said to be self-sterile, and need to be cross pollinated.
The beautiful large fruit unlike other Guatemalensis is oval in shape, has Red skin with Long green fins. The flesh is soft and bright purple, with crunchy seeds and has sweet and tangy tropical melon grape flavor. Average weight 1-1.5 Lbs. and Brix reported at 15-19 depends on ripeness. Bud-Flower 21 days, Flower to ripe fruit 30 days.

At Dragon Alley’s Nursery we are growing both La Verne Red and Donovan’s Lavern and we are looking forward to report back to you on the difference between the varieties if any.

Please note:

We are currently not selling dragon fruit cuttings. Our plants are still young, and we are waiting on them to start producing.

Selling fruit plants true to type is our top priority. Once our plants mature and we can verify the fruit we will notify all those who subscribed.
